What is a hedge?

A hedge is defined as a line of 2 or more bushes or plants.

Why remove hedges?

Hedge has grown too close to the house or other property.

The hedge is overgrown and visually unpleasant.

It is blocking the sun for homeowners or other plants in the area.

It is interfering with important infrastructures such as drains or cabling.

The hedge is taking too much space and requires too much maintenance.

What to consider before the hedge removal process?

Even though there is no law preventing you from removing your own hedges, consider the immediate visual effect on your surroundings, impact on wildlife, your privacy and good neighbour relations.

Some shrub types are protected by tree preservations orders so make sure that your hedge is not one of them. Consult your local authority if you’re not sure about specific obligations regarding your bushes and hedges.

Permit

There is no need to obtain any permit to remove hedges on your property.

What season is ideal for hedge removal?

You can really remove hedges during any season but aim for mild weather and soft soil to make your work comfortable.

Equipment

Make sure to have all the protective gear. Steel toe boots, hat, gloves, goggles and clothing that protect you against cuts.

Use pruners, lopping shears and hand saw to remove the branches.

Shovel and crowbar will help you remove the roots and root ball if it’s smaller.

How do you remove hedges?

Find out if the hedge sits on some important facilities. This will help you select the tools that you need.

Removing hedges is a fairly simple process. Start by removing branches all the way down to the root. Use standard tools depending on the thickness of the branches.

Remove the roots manually afterwards. If there is a thick root ball, you can use the stump grinding machinery to grind the stump and root ball into smaller wood chips.

How to choose the right service provider?

Ask your tree service specialists about the exact work that will be done. You don’t want to be left with hedge clippings and branches all over your property.

Find out about the machinery your arborist is planning to sue. Your specific space might restrict the use of some machinery.

What factors influence the cost?

The height and length of the hedge are the obvious factors.

How established and extensive is the root system.

Accessibility to the area.

Hedge species.

Depth and network of the root system.

What machinery will be necessary to remove the hedge?

Surrounding infrastructure.

Hedge removal costs anywhere between $100 -$ 200 per 5 feet of the hedge.

How deep is the root system of your hedges?

It depends on the species but the average root depth of a hedge is 18 inches. Depth of the root system is influenced by soil quality, improper watering or bush species.

Juniper hedges for example are hard ones to remove. They consist of an extensive root system that grows continuously throughout the season. You will need to chop up and remove the entire root system to remove juniper hedges for good.

What to do after the hedge is removed?

You can fill the empty space with soil or compost. You may also plant different plants in that area.

Can you replace the hedge with a fence?

You can, but as I mentioned earlier, it will have an impact on your privacy, visual appeal and wildlife.

On the other hand, a fence requires minimal maintenance compared to a hedge.

A fence creates a stable boundary between you and your neighbours.

A fence will not grow to interfere with surrounding infrastructure.

Mitigate the impact on wildlife by planting climbing plants that will create visually appealing spaces for people and useful spaces for insects and other small animals.
